 I have over 30 years of experience working with parents, children, schools, and community groups. I am a clinician, parenting coach, college professor, and public speaker. I have developed a number of parenting seminars, including this favorite: Adolescent Psychology-The Parent Version, which I have presented at hundreds of schools and businesses. I have a unique brand of "infotainment," using humor, storytelling, and sending parents home with a "goody bag" of helpful techniques.
Since I hate sitting in an office, I have decided that coaching parents can be done anywhere. Getting a cup of coffee at a local coffee shop; meeting in parents homes; or going to a parent's workplace, are all fine with me. A good cup of coffee and a good talk can heal all wounds. When parents need help, it doesn't matter how far they are away from me. Skyping (although that means I have to put on a little make-up), or a phone call can bring us as close as the neighborhood coffee shop. My coaching philosophy, like my book, is to figure out the problem fast, and provide an effective strategy before the hour is up.
My favorite way of helping parents is with my "Ask The Expert" parties. Think Tupperware parties for parents. A group of parents who are either all friends who have teenagers, or groups of parents whose teens are all friends, get together for a little food, and a little "Joani." Parents come together, looking for answers as they struggle with the perennial issues of teen "sex, drugs, and rock and roll, add a dash of cellphone addiction, teen attitude and let's call it a "party."
I have been teaching at Curry College for over 20 years. My students have been my best teachers when it comes to keeping current with the teen experience. Changes in technology occur daily. Like playing a challenging game of whack-a-mole, parents must always be ahead of the newest "app."
